Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is just one condition that the experts at Trinity Psychiatric Health in Lake Mary, Florida, helps to monitor and control. Dr. Sherry Gergis offers diagnosis and treatment for all ages.
ADHD can affect adults but is most common in children. The three main symptoms of ADHD are impulsivity, inattention, and hyperactivity. The inability to focus and feeling the need to move constantly (especially when it is an inappropriate time) are often accompanied by making decisions without thinking of the consequences. While hyperactivity and inattention can be present in most children in general, ADHD symptoms are more exaggerated than normal for the age of the child and tend to cause problems in school settings as well as the ability to function at home.
ADHD affects approximately 8.4% of children and 2.5% of adults. Male children are more prone to experiencing the condition.
Diagnosing ADHD in children often begins when problems are seen at school. Teachers are sometimes asked for details about the child’s behavior in the diagnosis process. ADHD is diagnosed by interviewing parents, teachers, and others who observe the child’s behaviors as well as undergoing a medical evaluation. No lab tests are available to help make such a diagnosis.
No causes have been found for ADHD, although genetics have been shown to contribute to it. One of the most important things to remember is that anyone suffering from this condition is not defiant or unable to understand. There are methods and treatments available to assist in controlling it.
