Oppositional Defiant Disorder
If a child is exhibiting symptoms of purposeful misbehavior and maybe even aggression, they may be suffering from an oppositional defiant disorder. ODD will often show symptoms between 6 and 8 years of age. It can also continue through adulthood.
Childhood tantrums are normal if they only occur occasionally. When the frequency becomes abnormal and continued, life at home and school can be difficult. Learning disabilities emerge, and home life becomes stressful for the entire family.
ODD is divided into two types. Childhood-onset begins at an early age. This type can become more serious if not treated early. Adolescent-onset comes on suddenly during the middle-school or high-school years.
Defiance against any authoritative figure, deliberately causing conflict, lying, and having no regret for their behavior are just a few symptoms of an oppositional defiant disorder. These symptoms are evident in the home, in school, and social situations, creating a negative impact on all areas of life.
The absolute cause of ODD is unknown but can be one or a combination of social, psychological, or biological factors.
Treatment for ODD will consist of different types of therapy (psychotherapy, family therapy, and parent training), medication (especially if linked to other conditions such as ADHD or anxiety), and behavior modification methods.
